Thought I would share with you some of the awesome feedback we've been receiving since the launch of One Sunny Day in Byron Bay. Here goes... "Yay! The Byron Book is here. Ever since we first picked up Lennox, we've been super excited for Byron to come out and great news, it doesn't disappoint! Love every bit of this book - the rhyme, the experience, the illustrations AND the fact it raised a lot of money for a great school. Feeling very proud of our beautiful town about now."           Ellouise, Byron Bay "Feeling today that…
Today marked a joyous occassion when we officially cut the ribbon on "One Sunny Day in Byron Bay". Students, teachers, parents, media and our wonderful sponsors all gathered in the hall of Byron Bay Public School to watch the first official reading of the book on the big screen. And what a great response! Anyone who picks up this book instantly falls in love with it and the feedback from everyone today has been overwhelming. To watch the joy on kids facing each time a page is turned is incredible and I'm buzzing from the excitement that filled the hall.…
The girls and I recently had a fun day when we headed for BayFM and Lismore City Printery on a school excursion. First up was an interview with Phil Daly, who hosts Byron Business, to talk about the upcoming book and the concept of One Sunny Day. I took all the girls with me to the studio, where they got a quick tour before being directed to the green room. With Mia and Azura in tow, I then headed back into the studio to speak with Phil. Can I just say how impressed I was with the two girls who…
One Sunny Day in Byron Bay is finally underway and will be officially launched in August 2014!  Over the last eight weeks I have been working with the kids of Byron Bay Public School on developing the next book in the One Sunny Day series. We began by running a competition that saw students write a short story about the town of Byron Bay and from those stories, eight children were selected for their writing skill, dedication and focus. Together, we have carefully been constructing the rhyme, illustrations and locations to appear in this exciting new book.  I have to…
As part of an attempt to lure tourists to the Macadamia Castle once the Pacific Highway upgrade is complete, Tony Gilding, the Macadamia Castle’s owner has unveiled three new rainproof features. According to the Northern Star, the new features cost $500,000 but Gilding believes the investment (which was partially funded by the Federal Government’s Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund) will be worth it. The Macadamia Castle now features a multi-purpose conference and dining room, as well as an exhibition space suitable for large school or tourist groups. On top of this, an 85-seat covered education stage has been added. For…
It’s good news at last for residents fighting for a water play area in Ballina, with the Northern Star reporting that the Ballina Council is considering a masterplan for a multi-million-dollar development at Captain Cook Park. Parents in the Ballina region have been requesting for years that Ballina pump some money into the beautiful riverfront, with the main focus being a water-play area for kids. The belief is that a new water-play area could entice more tourists to the area, as well as provide a fun and safe alternative for families not wanting to visit the beach in summer. The…
Novelist Gregoire Delacourt has reportedly landed in hot water with actress Scarlett Johansson after he featured her as a character in his book The first thing you look at, which was published in March. According to The Telegraph, a female character in the book is initially referred to as Scarlett Johansson, before revealing 60 pages later that in fact she is a French woman named Jeanie. Unhappy about the reference to her name, Johansson is suing JC Lattes, publisher of Mr Delacourt’s book, for “breach and fraudulent use of personal rights”. She also plans to halt any production of the…
My husband and I recently went on a jet boat ride on the Gold Coast when we escaped a morning from the kids.  When we were hopping on board, there was a family having a debate with the operator saying they wanted to take their eight-year old boy on the ride, despite his very short height. My heart ached for the family as they were all very short and the husband was explaining how he'd always been kept off things when he was little because of his height. He was clearly determined to see his boy escape the pain that…
It’s exciting times for WH Auden fans, with The Sunday Times reporting that his long lost journal has been rediscovered, nearly 75 years after it was written. While the ink may have faded a little, the journal will no doubt shed some light on the intimate life of one of Britain’s greatest and best loved literary figures. The journal is said to have been written around the same time he was writing the poem September 1, 1939 and is believed to speak of the outbreak of the Second World War. Auden began writing the journal approximately 8 months after his…
Harper Lee, the reclusive author of the classic book To Kill A Mockingbird, has sued her literary agent for allegedly tricking her into signing over the copyright to her award-winning book. Now 87, The Guardian reports that the son of her long-time agent, Eugene Winick, took advantage of her failing eyesight and hearing to transfer the copyright of her book, which was successfully turned into an Oscar-winning film and sold more than 30 million copies. Harper Lee was a one-time author, who rarely leaves her house and this is very sad that this has allegedly happened. She is convinced that…
I was chatting with a friend today about what influenced us to choose baby names. She informed me that her next baby, if a boy, will be named after her current TV character crush, much to the disgust of her partner. There are so many factors that go into choosing a baby name and it can be one of the hardest decisions you’ll make. Rightly so, I guess, as you’ll be stuck with your choice forever! Some lucky few know their choice of names from way before their child is even a twinkle in their eye. A few girls I…
Inspired by the lousy weather we are having, I thought I would share with you my top kid’s movies. This is in my opinion and in no particular order. If you have a favourite movie you like to watch with your kids, please let us know! 1. Hotel Transylvania (2012) Our current favourite. Dracula runs a high-end resort that hides its guests from the human world. After his wife's death, the Count is naturally over protective of his daughter so panic sets in when a human boy discovers the resort and falls in love with his vampire daughter. 2.…
As I watched you watching the news last night, I saw the panicked look on your face. The reporter was talking about the crazy shopping antics of frantic husbands trying to get a last minute gift for their wives and I could see your mind ticking. I want you to know that I don’t care that we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. I’m not one of those wives that says I don’t care but secretly hopes I’ll be woken with a big bunch of flowers. I honestly don’t give two hoots about it. Some people may think that kind of thought…
The holidays are drawing to a close and school is fast approaching. This final week can prove a stressful time as both parents and children prepare for routine, homework and rules. With a little preparation, however, it doesn't have to be so hard. For children, the idea of starting or returning to school can be exciting, but it can also be a little daunting. They are about to embark on a lot of 'new' things- new teachers, new classmates, new subjects and new challenges. Often children can experience difficulty sleeping and in some severe cases children can become quite distressed…
It’s taken me a few weeks, but I’ve finally figured out my New Year resolution. My husband and I have been laughing lately at how much we’ve aged since having kids and decided to go through our photos taken over the last four years. What we discovered is that while we have thousands of photos of the kids, we are very rarely in the photo ourselves. For me personally, I’ve always been the camera woman or too conscious of the fact I’m either without make up, minus a bra or still carrying baby weight. The reality is, that when you…
Experts say that the majority of ‘teething’ grizzles, in fact, have nothing to do with teeth. They say that ‘teething’ is a myth, that most kids will cut a new tooth with no pain, no fuss. Until I had my son, I took their word. I never had an issue with my daughter when it came to teeth and was always surprised to open her mouth and discover a new tooth. She never made a peep, never grizzled and never dribbled. Teething was a piece of cake! I found myself getting frustrated when my friends blamed every little grumble that…
Over the weekend, I had a long chat with a friend who recently lost her baby at 8 months pregnant due to a placental abruption. I had just left a kids birthday party and as my sugar loaded children slept in the back seat, my thoughts turned to her and her tragic loss. Not long ago I had discussed my daughter’s upcoming birthday ideas with my friend who excitedly squealed “I can’t wait to do the whole birthday thing. I’m going to go all out for this one.” Patting her large belly, she’d continued “I already know the cake I’m…
Ok, it’s official. My boobies have gone. Well, not gone, just shrunk. This morning, I hit the shops in the search of new bras as I am sick and tired of feeling like a little girl trying on her mummy’s bras and prancing around in ludicrously big lingerie. I sometimes feel like I should slip my size 7 feet into my husband’s size 12 shoes, put lipstick on from ear to ear or put on my once loved 6 inch heels and wobble for full effect. For months I have been dropping tiny peas into big potato sacks so enough…
When putting together Coastal Kids Magazine and the upcoming Coastal Teens Magazine, we often mull over story headlines for what seems like an eternity. Trying to match a headline to a story can sometimes prove difficult and getting it right takes time.                        It's important we don't state the obvious:                                                                                  …
When it comes to gifts in my family at Christmas there are a few things that are always given. Firstly, my husband and I always give ourselves a little break away and secondly, my kids always receive books. Lots and lots of books. Thirdly, body wash and soap and fourthly, a quirky item. Christmas is always a busy time in our household as my husband is flat out getting rid of everyone’s bugs in time for the big day. No one wants to serve Christmas dinner with ants and cockroaches running around! This Christmas, I’d like you to all be…
